Statement date vs due date: what is the difference?
The statement date, also called the closing date, is the day a credit card's billing cycle ends and the issuer produces a statement of what you owe. The due date is the day payment for that statement is due, usually a few weeks later. Anything you buy after the statement date goes on the next statement, which has its own due date.
Side by side
| Statement date | Due date | |
|---|---|---|
| What happens | The billing cycle closes and a statement is issued | Payment for that statement is due |
| What it decides | Which statement a purchase lands on | When you pay for that statement |
| How often | Once a month, on about the same day | Once a month, some days after the statement date |
| Who sets it | Your card issuer | Your card issuer |
An example
A card's statement date is the 15th and its due date is the 5th of the following month. A purchase on 14 March lands on the statement that closes on 15 March, due on 5 April. A purchase on 16 March lands on the statement that closes on 15 April, due on 5 May.
Why both dates matter
- The due date is when to pay. On most cards, paying the full statement balance by then means no interest on purchases.
- The statement date decides how long a purchase waits before it is due. Spend just after it and you have the most time before payment.

Questions
Is the due date the same day every month?
Usually it is a fixed day of the month, or a fixed number of days after the statement date. Some banks move it to the next business day when it lands on a weekend. Your statement shows the exact date.
Where do I find my statement date?
On your card statement, often labelled closing date or statement date, and in your bank's app.
How does Cardper use the two dates?
You enter a card's statement day and due day once. Cardper works out every cycle from them, sorts your cards by the next due date and reminds you ahead of it.
